The Puppet Showplace Theater and a Giveaway

Recently, my kids and I were invited to attend a performance at the Puppet Showplace Theater in Brookline, MA. We took in “Raccoon Tales,” a series of three short pieces about a wily raccoon and his adventures tricking other animals he encounters in the woods. The show was performed by Brad Shur, the Theater’s Resident Artist.

As we approached the Theater, which is tucked into a side street in Brookline Village, across from the subway stop, I realized that I had never taken my kids to a puppet show before. They had seen puppets in school, of course, but we had never taken in a professional show. That may have explained their excitement!

Puppet Showplace Theater

Who knew puppets were so small?

The Theater has a generous, sunlit lobby area with puppets on display that children can (carefully) play with while waiting for curtain time. My kids, R and G, immediately gravitated to a large purple alien-looking creature and a hedgehog, putting on their own show in the lobby’s large picture window.

My kids laughed uproariously throughout “Raccoon Tales.” So caught up in the story they seemed surprised when Brad Shur came out afterward to answer questions, forgetting that the raccoon and his friends were puppets–not real animals.

Founded in 1974, the Puppet Showplace offers 300 puppet shows each year. The Theater also fosters learning about puppetry through workshops and training programs for children and adults. They even have a summer camp for kids! They welcome professional puppet companies from around the world, with shows geared to children ages 3-10. The shows last up to one hour, and the schedule of performances can be found online.  Tickets for general admission at the Puppet Showplace Theater are $12, with special rates for groups. Birthday party packages are also available.
