The Paint Bar

Last week, I was fortunate to spend an evening at The Paint Bar, along fellow blogger, Cheryl of Busy Since Birth. We were invited to attend one of The Paint Bar’s fun three-hour, instructor-led painting sessions, and it was a terrific way to spend an evening with a friend.

Before you think The Paint Bar is just for skilled artists, let me assure you: “skilled artist” is a phrase that has never been used to describe me. I appreciate art, but my artistic skills are limited to knowing how to use crayons and washable markers. So, at first, I thought I would be out of my element during the painting session, but the instructor, Mia, put me and the others in the class at ease with her warmth and humor.

The rest of the evening was spent following Mia’s instructions. Step-by-step, she walked us all through how to make our painting. And, you know what? We did it! Everyone’s final product was unique, and often different from the inspiration piece. Many in our class deviated a bit with their pieces—me included—by changing some of the colors around or adding a personal flair to some of the smaller elements. Adding a little bit of ourselves into the painting made each one special (and worthy of hanging on a museum wall!). In mine, I replaced the inspiration piece’s black shutters with red shutters—of course!

The others in our class included birthday parties, mother-daughter teams, friends out for an evening together, and couples. With a fully stocked bar, the ambiance was heavy on fun.

My painting now hangs in my office at work, a colorful reminder of my night stretching my artistic skills. I’ve even received compliments on it from my (very kind) coworkers. Perhaps I should try my hand at painting more often!

The Paint Bar is a family-owned local business, with outposts in Newton and on Newbury Street in Boston. I had such a great time that I’m now organizing my office holiday party—at The Paint Bar!

Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary spot in The Paint Bar’s painting session. All of the opinions in this post are my own.
